Knitting Grounds Trunk Show The Orenburg Tradition: The Mystique of Russian Lace By Galina A. Khmeleva From Skaska DesignTuesday April 7th 4pm to 8 pm This literal translation of Skaska says it best; the achievement of Skaska's fundamental goal has been an eclectic juxtaposition of both a fairy tale and a miracle. In the early 1990's, it had become painfully clear to Galina Alexandrovna Khmeleva that the Orenburg lace knitting industry was bordering on the precipice of extinction; it became Galina's mission, her passion, her obsession to prevent this from happening. Since this textile art form had literally defined the lives of the knitters of Orenburg since the early 18th century, it would prove to be no small challenge. Now, some 15 years later, defying all odds and a local skepticism that nearly proved fatal, the industry has entered a new period of growth; a renaissance most believed beyond reach in their lifetime. Truly a miracle with that elusive fairy tale ending Items and yarns will be available for sale Knitting Grounds6921 Brayton Drive # 105 next to Kaladi Brotheres Coffee Shop Anchorage AK 99507 907-336-5648 |
